Relations between the two leaders have improved recently, with Trump granting Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot missiles and discussing potential strategies to end the conflict. Zelensky noted on social media that his primary goals are reinforcing strategic cooperation with the U.S. and advancing the cause of peace. This trip also coincides with a memorial service for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a key advocate for Ukraine, and a planned address by Zelensky to the Senate regarding a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill.
Despite the support from the White House, political hurdles remain. While 62 senators currently support the sanctions legislation, some Democrats have expressed concerns over tariff provisions. Meanwhile, Zelensky faces the challenge of winning over skeptical Democratic lawmakers, even as significant resistance to aid continues among some Republicans in the House of Representatives.
Tensions remain elevated globally, with Russia continuing its aerial campaign against Ukraine and Moscow officials warning that expanded Ukrainian strikes inside Russian territory will only lengthen the war.
