Wrexham are nearing a deal to bring Newcastle United recruitment chief Steve Nickson on board as their new sporting director. Expected to depart the Magpies this summer, Nickson is set to transition into this newly established role with the Welsh club in September.
During his 15-year tenure at Newcastle, Nickson played an instrumental part in high-profile acquisitions, including Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Miguel Almiron. Wrexham view this appointment as a significant step forward in their ambition to eventually reach the Premier League. Once he arrives, Nickson will collaborate closely with manager Phil Parkinson to oversee transfer activity and broader football operations.
Parkinson has been kept informed throughout the process and intends to leverage Nickson’s extensive industry knowledge. The manager has publicly acknowledged that the squad requires improvements to handle the intensity of the Championship and expects new player arrivals during the current transfer window.
Wrexham, who finished seventh in the Championship last season after three consecutive promotions, are currently in the United States for pre-season matches against Liverpool, Leeds United, and Sunderland. The team prepares for their upcoming Carabao Cup opener against Middlesbrough on August 7, followed by their league opener against Cardiff City on August 17.
