Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Hits 920 Amid International Rescue Surge

A devastating series of earthquakes in Venezuela has claimed 920 lives, prompting a massive international relief effort as rescuers search for survivors beneath the wreckage.

The Venezuelan government reports that at least 920 people have died and 3,360 others have been injured following two powerful earthquakes that struck the nation. With 172 individuals still reported missing, officials warn the casualty count will likely increase as search efforts persist.

The twin tremors occurred on Wednesday, with the second quake reaching a magnitude of 7.5, marking one of the most significant seismic events in the country in a century. The coastal state of La Guaira has suffered the most severe damage, impacting critical infrastructure including the Simón Bolívar International Airport and local medical centers. Across the country, hundreds of buildings, hospitals, and shopping centers have been compromised.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed that while 214 aftershocks have been recorded, rescue teams have successfully pulled dozens of survivors from the debris. In one notable instance of success, three siblings were recovered alive in La Guaira. Despite these efforts, medical professionals report that local hospitals, already struggling from long-term economic instability, are severely overwhelmed by the influx of trauma cases.

International aid has begun to arrive as the government coordinates with global partners. Search and rescue personnel, equipment, and dogs have been deployed from several countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Switzerland, Mexico, and the Netherlands. The United States has pledged $150 million in aid and mobilized naval support to assist the recovery mission.

Tragedy has touched many lives, including the family of footballer Héctor Bello, whose wife Andrea reportedly died while protecting their child during the collapse. As the nation faces this humanitarian crisis, officials continue to clear rubble and distribute supplies to the hardest-hit regions in a race against time.
