The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has pulled a disputed sexual harassment awareness poster after facing significant backlash online. The institution emphasized its dedication to ending sexual misconduct and formally denounced the practice of blaming victims.
The poster, which was created by the Student Affairs Division, drew intense scrutiny for suggesting that female students avoid specific behaviors such as accepting gifts from men, shaking hands, being alone with men in private, or consuming adult content. Many argued these points unfairly shifted the responsibility for harassment onto women instead of focusing on the actions of aggressors.
On Monday, the university management confirmed that the materials had been removed, noting that while the division created the document, the content does not align with the school’s actual standards or values. In an official statement signed by Communication Unit head Adejoke R. Alaga-Ibraheem, the university declared that it rejects all forms of harassment and victim-shaming. It further stated that sexual misconduct is a severe issue that affects individuals of all genders, and therefore has no place within the university.
Moving forward, the university urged community members to utilize official, confidential channels to report any incidents of harassment. The administration pledged to remain focused on fostering a secure, inclusive, and equitable environment for all students and staff.
