The administration at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has ordered all students to attend an urgent meeting to address escalating safety risks on and near campus. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tanko Ishaya issued the directive via an internal memo, marked UJ/VC/55, on July 29, 2026. The assembly is slated for July 31, 2026, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
To guarantee student attendance, faculty deans and department heads have been instructed to cancel all classes from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Attendance is mandatory for the entire student body. Prof. Ishaya emphasized that the discussion will focus on recent troubling events, general safety protocols, and protective measures for the campus community.
This initiative responds to a period of instability at the institution. Recent anxieties include the discovery of a non-staff farmer’s body on university land and the public outcry surrounding the death of student and model Ibrahim Mbaya, who was killed by a mob after being accused of theft near his off-campus residence. Local authorities are currently investigating these occurrences.
