A tragic building collapse in Amaokpala, Orumba North Local Government Area, has resulted in two confirmed deaths and three injuries. Rescue efforts concluded for the day on Monday, according to Ndidi Omega, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency.
The three-story structure in Oko Community served as housing for both students of the Federal Polytechnic Oko and other residents. While the three survivors are currently hospitalized, authorities plan to resume search operations on Tuesday.
In response to the incident, the Anambra state government has locked down the site. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, stated that a search is underway for the building’s owner and manager. Ojukwu indicated that early investigations suggest the property suffered from structural issues that were ignored in favor of financial gain. Moving forward, the government intends to conduct integrity tests on other nearby buildings and will release a formal policy position shortly.
