President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to lift the court-mandated freeze on the bank account belonging to the Osun State government. The agency’s initial decision to block the funds had sparked widespread public criticism.
In an official statement, President Tinubu expressed personal embarrassment regarding the timing of the commission’s actions. He noted that although the agency acted under a legal mandate, the public often attributes such federal moves directly to his administration, regardless of his prior awareness.
The President reiterated his policy of non-interference in the operations of law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies. He emphasized his belief that these institutions must function independently and professionally to uphold the rule of law. Furthermore, he stated that while he expects these bodies to carry out their duties, he felt compelled to intervene in this specific instance to address the public outcry caused by the timing of the enforcement.
