The National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) has disbanded its Edo State Executive Committee and halted all local operations. This decision follows claims of defiance against national directives.
During a meeting on July 18, 2026, the National Administrative Council (NAC) addressed a workshop held in Benin City two days prior. General Secretary Ali Baba issued a formal letter on July 20, 2026, naming Edo State Chairman Decency Ochie for his role in the controversy. The union leadership asserted that Ochie incorrectly acknowledged a specific individual as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman for the state, ignoring the NLC Caretaker Committee that the national body officially recognizes.
The union characterized this choice as a serious disciplinary violation that damaged the organization’s reputation. Consequently, the executive committee was removed, and union functions in Edo State are suspended indefinitely. The national leadership has strictly prohibited the former officials from acting on behalf of the union. Relevant labor organizations have been informed of these changes, and the union emphasized that it will not tolerate actions that subvert national policy or harm its professional standing.
