Ten Children Die as Diphtheria Outbreak Hits Niger State
Ten children have lost their lives to a diphtheria outbreak in Agaie and Bida local government areas of Niger State.
The victims were admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, but later died. Additional diphtheria-related deaths have also been recorded in nearby communities since the outbreak began.
Residents have appealed to the state government to urgently supply drugs to general hospitals in order to prevent further spread of the disease.
Confirming the outbreak, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tertiary Health Care, Dr. Mohammed Gana, said the government, in partnership with health agencies, is taking steps to contain the situation and provide essential treatment.
