Jess Turnbull, a 19-year-old police officer, has died following a fatal crash while she was en route to an emergency call. She succumbed to her injuries in the hospital this Wednesday. Turnbull joined the Northumbria Police force in September and was remembered by Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine as a hardworking individual who was deeply committed to public safety.
The incident occurred on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington late Monday evening. Turnbull was responding to a collision between a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer when her marked police vehicle was struck by a Mercedes. A 73-year-old man, who was initially detained on suspicion of causing serious injury, is now being investigated for causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.
Chief Constable Jardine expressed the force’s collective grief, emphasizing that Turnbull made the ultimate sacrifice while serving her community. Northumbria Police has requested that members of the public send their condolences to the force’s Wallsend headquarters rather than leaving floral tributes at the site of the accident.
