Team Wales Aim for Podium Success at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

With 114 athletes competing across ten sports, Team Wales arrives in Glasgow ready to represent their nation at the 23rd Commonwealth Games.

A contingent of 114 athletes is representing Wales at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The event spans over 10 days of intense competition across ten different sports. The festivities officially kick off on Thursday at the Hydro Arena, with the first day of sporting action following on Friday, July 24. A preliminary day of events was added to the schedule to accommodate an unexpected surge in entries for the bowls and para bowls competitions.

Athletes from Wales are prepared to face competitors from 73 nations and territories. This year’s event represents a more concise format following Glasgow’s decision to step in as host after the original venue, Victoria, Australia, withdrew. Welsh participants will compete in disciplines ranging from weightlifting and artistic gymnastics to 3×3 wheelchair basketball and track cycling.

Team Wales features several high-profile stars, including Paris 2024 gold medalist Emma Finucane and experienced para athlete Olivia Breen. Rising talents like swimmer Theodora Taylor and judo competitor Lola Hodson are also expected to make their mark. Boxer Rosie Eccles, who serves as the nation’s flag bearer, intends to defend her title before retiring from the Games.

Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones emphasizes that while medal counts are notable, the primary objective is ensuring every athlete achieves their personal best. Despite the scaled-back nature of this year’s event, the team aims to build on the legacy established during the 2018 Gold Coast Games, which remains Wales’ most successful performance to date with 36 total medals.
