Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has shared his pick for the 2026 FIFA World Cup champion. The former Real Madrid star believes his home nation, Spain, is poised to secure the title as they approach their semi-final clash with France.
To reach their first final since 2010, the current European champions must defeat France. Spain’s path to this stage included a dominant win against Austria, a victory over Portugal in the Round of 16, and a dramatic late goal by Arsenal player Mikel Merino to knock out Belgium in the quarter-finals.
Although France has maintained a perfect record of six wins, scoring 16 goals while allowing only two, Alonso remains convinced that Spain’s squad is remarkably powerful. He expressed significant optimism about their chances, noting that the current team’s energy and tactical control remind him of the Spanish side that emerged victorious in his playing days.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Alonso emphasized that regardless of the semi-final result, the game will be a spectacle. He remains fully confident that his countrymen have what it takes to lift the trophy. Several other Chelsea players, such as Reece James of England and Enzo Fernandez of Argentina, are also still competing in the tournament.
