Vitor Matos has secured a new contract with Swansea City, extending his tenure at the Championship side until 2030. The 38-year-old manager, who initially joined on a deal lasting until 2029 last November, has earned this reward due to the club’s marked improvement under his guidance.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Matos highlighted the profound bond between the team, the supporters, and the local area as a primary motivation for his decision to stay. Swansea’s chief executive, Tom Gorringe, emphasized that the decision reflects the club’s desire for stability and confidence in the direction Matos is steering the squad.
Before moving to South Wales, Matos served as an elite development coach at Liverpool and worked as an assistant at Red Bull Salzburg. Since replacing Alan Sheehan last November, he successfully steered the team away from relegation concerns and finished the season in 11th place, achieving 14 victories in 30 league matches.
As Matos prepares for his first full season at the helm, the club has invested nearly £15m in new talent, including Moussa Yeo, Elijah Just, Joseph Opoku, and defender Stephen Welsh. While midfielder Ethan Galbraith has departed, the club is currently navigating the transfer window with hopes of continued progress. Swansea kicks off their new campaign against Stoke City on August 15.
