Former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming has secured the position of England Test coach, marking his first stint leading a national side. Joe Root will simultaneously return to his role as Test captain. Fleming, 53, brings extensive experience from his 17-year tenure with the Chennai Super Kings, where he guided the team to five Indian Premier League titles.
This appointment follows the dismissal of Brendon McCullum earlier this month due to underwhelming performance and various controversies; however, McCullum will continue leading England’s white-ball squads. Root, 35, previously served as Test captain from 2017 to 2022, securing 27 victories across 65 matches.
Fleming expressed his enthusiasm, calling the role a prestigious honour. Due to his current commitments, Fleming will not oversee the upcoming Test series against Pakistan starting August 19, with assistant coach Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach. Fleming plans to join the team later this summer after spending time in New Zealand, preparing for the South Africa Test tour scheduled for December. Root remarked that the prospect of working with Fleming serves as a significant motivator, praising the new coach’s leadership history and deep understanding of the sport.
