A 45-year-old individual is in custody following a deadly shooting on Monday at a residential facility for mothers and infants in Stade, located near Hamburg. The attack claimed the lives of six staff members, specifically four women and two men. Authorities in Lüneburg have indicated that the violence stemmed from a disagreement regarding child custody.
The suspect, a German man of Turkish descent, had arrived at the center for a scheduled meeting concerning his three-month-old child, who resided there with the mother. Law enforcement also apprehended a 65-year-old woman accused of acting as an accomplice by driving the suspect away from the scene. She is reportedly close to the perpetrator’s family.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier voiced his profound distress over the tragedy, noting the severity of violence occurring in a location intended as a sanctuary. This event adds to a series of recent firearm incidents in Germany, including a family-related shooting in Berlin this January and a murder-suicide in Bavaria during February.
