A large-scale fire in Newbridge, Caerphilly, has left multiple properties destroyed and displaced twenty individuals who were initially relocated to a leisure centre. Emergency responders were called to the scene near Hazelwood Road on Wednesday at 16:00 BST. While six bungalows were evacuated, no casualties have been reported.
Councillor Adrian Hussey confirmed that the affected dwellings were completely gutted by the flames, which also damaged several vehicles. Local attempts to extinguish the blaze proved unsuccessful due to the intensity of the fire. By early Thursday, Caerphilly council leader James Pritchard confirmed that the displaced residents had been moved to hotel accommodations for further support.
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service remains on-site to conduct an investigation into the origin of the fire. Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth noted that regional fire services are currently operating at maximum capacity due to frequent wildfires during the recent heatwave. In the meantime, Newbridge RFC has opened its doors to provide showers and refreshments to those impacted by the disaster.
