Senator Rufa’i Hanga has expressed skepticism regarding a potential 2027 presidential bid involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Amid rumors that he might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Kano Central representative suggested that the ticket lacks the necessary national appeal to succeed.
Speaking to Freedom Radio following discussions with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and APC leadership, Hanga argued that both Obi and Kwankwaso have limited regional strongholds. He noted that Kwankwaso’s influence is primarily concentrated in Kano, while Obi’s reach is largely restricted to Anambra and select southern areas. Hanga suggested that Atiku Abubakar might present a more viable challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the northern regions due to widespread economic and security concerns.
Addressing his history with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the senator maintained that choosing a different political direction does not constitute betrayal. He emphasized his past loyalty during difficult periods but noted that their relationship strained after he was sidelined for specific party tickets and positions. Hanga further clarified that he was abroad for medical care when the party appointed Mustapha Kwankwaso as their deputy governorship nominee.
