Rotimi Amaechi, a prominent political figure, has publicly criticized President Bola Tinubu and his media representatives for what he describes as offensive treatment of Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Onaiyekan and the broader Catholic community. This dispute follows comments made by Cardinal Onaiyekan regarding a recent session between the President and the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria, which prompted a sharp response from the presidency.
Speaking on Channels Television, Amaechi argued that the Cardinal warrants a level of respect comparable to that afforded to a state governor. He reasoned that bishops oversee entire regions, making their influence and status significant. Amaechi stated his commitment to defending his faith against what he views as derogatory remarks from government officials.
Furthermore, Amaechi challenged the transparency of meetings involving the president, asserting that the presence of cameras makes such encounters public record rather than private discussions. He specifically took issue with rhetoric used by administration supporters, noting that dismissing or attacking a high-ranking cleric like a Cardinal, who participates in papal elections, is deeply disrespectful to the Catholic faith.
