President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honored the memory of Nigeria’s inaugural Military Head of State, General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, highlighting his legacy of discipline and patriotism. During the 60th memorial event in Umuahia, Abia State, on July 29, 2026, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (retd.) conveyed the President’s message.
Representing the administration, the Defence Minister noted that Aguiyi-Ironsi served with unmatched professionalism. Tinubu remarked that the late leader took charge during a defining era for the nation, striving to stabilize the country and protect its integrity despite the challenges of his brief tenure. The President emphasized that Aguiyi-Ironsi prioritized national interests above all else, serving as an enduring model for those in leadership roles.
Addressing the attendees, Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to democratic stability and national unity. He urged citizens to embrace justice and tolerance to foster a prosperous future. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also spoke, remembering the late General as a distinguished officer who navigated a turbulent period in history with honor. Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti expressed gratitude for the recognition of a prominent son of the state, noting that Aguiyi-Ironsi’s commitment to cohesion remains a source of inspiration. The ceremony, attended by various political and military leaders, concluded with prayers for the nation and the late General’s family.
