Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu declared on Thursday that the future of Nigerian law enforcement depends on strategic partnerships, innovation, and a strong commitment to education.

During a visit to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in Abuja, Disu argued that despite public criticism, the Nigerian Police Force remains the primary institution holding the nation together.

Disu met with TETFund Executive Secretary Sonny Echono to discuss the importance of professional development. The IGP noted that many public complaints regarding police conduct stem from a lack of adequate education.

He emphasized that the force is now prioritizing a modern, research-driven approach to policing that incorporates artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, drone technology, and forensic science.

Highlighting the force’s modernization agenda, Disu discussed the establishment of a new police academy campus in Ogun State. He urged TETFund to maintain support for police infrastructure, including laboratories, ICT centers, and research facilities.

While acknowledging that the police force may not meet every public expectation, Disu maintained that officers are the only entity currently preventing national collapse.

In response, Sonny Echono praised the IGP’s leadership and confirmed TETFund’s commitment to the new Ogun State campus.

He advised the police chief to work toward securing full university status for the institution, which would ensure consistent annual funding from the agency.

Echono also expressed a desire to deepen collaboration with the police to enhance security across Nigeria’s educational institutions.
