The Oyo State Police Command successfully stopped a truck driver from stealing and selling 670 bags of guinea corn, which carried an estimated value of N33 million. Police arrested the driver, 46-year-old Monday, and his assistant, 40-year-old Kareem, in the Irepo area of Oyo Town. The arrests followed intelligence gathered by the Command’s Monitoring Unit under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola.
Officers seized an IVECO truck, registration MUS 809 XY, which still held the full shipment. The goods originated in Kaduna and were intended for delivery in Ibadan. Evidence suggests the driver redirected the truck while in Ogbomoso, aiming to offload the grain in Oyo Town for a quick N11 million sale. During questioning, Monday confessed to the scheme, claiming he intended to vanish with the cash. Kareem, his assistant, claimed he was innocent and unaware of the illegal plan, noting he had only recently joined the driver after his own business failed.
Comrade Gabriel Abba, the owner of the goods and chairman of the Kaduna branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, thanked the police for their intervention. Abba had hired the driver after he presented himself as a professional, only to grow suspicious when the driver began making excuses for delays while asking for more money. Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains active and that both suspects will face charges once the legal process concludes.
