Adams Oshiomhole, the senator for Edo North, contends that the 2023 naira redesign initiative spearheaded by former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele paved the way for Peter Obi to overcome President Bola Tinubu in Lagos. During a Monday interview on TVC, Oshiomhole argued that the policy was a disruptive attempt to destabilize the nation after Emefiele failed to secure a presidential candidacy.
The senator asserted that the ruling party inadvertently hindered its own candidates by fostering a climate of severe economic frustration. He highlighted how the abrupt currency change effectively locked citizens out of their own bank accounts, forcing them to endure long, fruitless queues at ATMs and fuel stations. Oshiomhole suggested that the resulting public outrage was a deliberate byproduct of the administration’s actions at the time. Ultimately, he believes this widespread resentment fueled the electoral shift that allowed Obi to outperform the APC in the former president’s stronghold.
