Members of the Olufadegin family in the Alekuso area of Ibadan have publicly challenged the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, over his alleged attempt to install Fatai Omosanjo Amzat as their new Mogaji. The family contends that this action threatens to destabilize their lineage.
Elder Dauda Adesina, speaking for the family, urged the monarch to remove Amzat from the installation list. The family argues that selecting a compound head is an internal process that should not involve outside interference. They noted that their previous Mogaji, the late Seriki Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji Yekini Adeojo, passed away on April 4, 2025.
The family explained that the succession contest initially featured Akeem Adeojo and Fatai Omosanjo Amzat. While Akeem Adeojo reportedly won an initial vote overseen by the Mogaji Committee, Amzat contested the outcome, leading to a second vote that ended in a tie. The family alleges that instead of holding a third ballot, family elder Lateef Busari attempted to use his personal connection with the Olubadan to bypass the democratic process.
The family expressed shock upon discovering Amzat’s name on the official installation list. They had anticipated that the Olubadan would mediate the dispute by meeting with both candidates and family representatives rather than proceeding with an appointment. According to the family, the Olubadan-in-Council had already settled on a list, and the sudden addition of Amzat suggests an effort to force a specific candidate upon them, which they claim contradicts Ibadan tradition.
Furthermore, the family suggested that the monarch’s actions may be motivated by past political tensions between him and the late Alhaji Yekini Adeojo. They have requested that the Olubadan allow the family to finalize their own selection to preserve peace within the compound.
