Oba Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, has issued a strong caution to Nigerian citizens regarding the upcoming 2027 elections. During his 4th coronation anniversary, the monarch emphasized that accepting small payments like N5,000 or N10,000 in exchange for votes is equivalent to trading away the future of the next generation.
The traditional ruler argued that despite the absence of a formal constitutional role for monarchs in governance, they still bear a moral duty to prioritize the welfare of their subjects. He urged his fellow traditional leaders to actively encourage their communities to secure Permanent Voter Cards and participate in the democratic process by supporting candidates with integrity.
While noting that monarchs must maintain a non-partisan stance because all political figures are viewed as their children, he insisted that community leaders cannot remain passive. Instead, they must guide the public to vote for individuals who are committed to genuine progress. The monarch concluded by highlighting that the core mission for any royal leader is to advocate for responsible governance that serves the public interest.
