Authorities at Oko Polytechnic have officially reported that no students perished in the recent collapse of a residential structure. Dr. Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, the school’s spokesperson, clarified that the failed building is a private lodge located in the adjacent Amaokpala community, housing both students and other residents.
He noted that the collapse happened after the conclusion of second-semester finals, a period when many students had already departed for the holidays. He dismissed rumors of student deaths, confirming that no such casualties had been verified.
Rector Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie inspected the site alongside university officials and student leaders to check on the wellbeing of the affected. Anambra State officials, including the Commissioner for Works, Architect Okey Ezeobi, and Health Commissioner Dr. Afam Ben Obidike, were also in attendance to supervise rescue efforts.
The institution confirmed that several survivors were sent to a local hospital for medical care. While rescue teams remain on site searching for two missing people, the polytechnic stressed that these individuals are not enrolled students.
