The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) has alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the current administration are working to undermine their political organization. The party is currently divided between the faction supporting Rabiu Kwankwaso and the group led by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam and Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major. Although Major and Aniebonam were expelled for anti-party activities after the 2023 elections, they have continued to challenge the leadership in court.
Recently, the FCT High Court directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to acknowledge the Major-led National Working Committee. Despite the fact that this group did not hold primaries or submit a membership register to the electoral body, INEC has permitted them to upload candidate names for the 2027 elections. Bala Yunusa Muhammed, the National Chairman aligned with Kwankwaso, criticized INEC for this shift in policy, noting that the commission had previously pledged to cooperate with his leadership.
Muhammed argued that the ruling party is threatened by the NNPP’s status as a major political force and is sponsoring expelled members to sow discord. He expressed deep concern that INEC acted prematurely on a lower court’s default judgment rather than waiting for the outcome of the party’s appeals. Furthermore, he emphasized that those recognized by INEC are not on the party’s official, electronically submitted membership register, rendering their appointment illegitimate.
