Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated head of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has officially revoked the legal standing of Ifeanyi Ejiofor. A document dated July 22, 2026, allegedly signed by Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, marks the formal end of Ejiofor’s role as his personal counsel. This information was circulated online by APC figure Joe Igbokwe.
In the text, Kanu asserts that he previously ended this professional relationship verbally and is now providing written confirmation. He further declared that Ejiofor lacks any authority to represent IPOB, emphasizing that under the organization’s rules, the power to manage legal appointments belongs exclusively to its leader. Kanu ordered the lawyer to stop representing him, his family, or the movement in any public or judicial capacity and strictly warned against the disclosure of any confidential information.
Ejiofor has pushed back against these claims, stating he resigned as Kanu’s private legal representative in December 2023. He clarified that while he stopped serving Kanu personally, he maintained his role as a solicitor for IPOB, representing hundreds of members in various courts since his departure from Kanu’s direct service. He underscored that his appointment to the group was independent of his former connection to Kanu.
Furthermore, Ejiofor questioned the legitimacy of the letter, noting it lacks the required authentication from the Nigerian Correctional Service. He maintains that his status remains valid based on the organization’s existing mandate and advised the public to treat the document with skepticism.
