The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued an alert regarding a medium flood risk for 17 states between July 21 and July 27. According to National Flood Advisory No. NFA-2026-200, residents and officials must prepare for localized flooding along primary riverbanks.
Umar Mohammed, the Director-General of NIHSA, identified Bauchi, Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Plateau, and Benue among the states at risk. Monitoring stations, such as those at the Karam and Waya rivers, have detected water levels exceeding critical safety thresholds. With 16 stations currently reporting high water, the agency emphasizes that immediate preventive steps are necessary.
Data shows Bauchi faces the greatest impact with 1,841 vulnerable communities, alongside numerous schools and health facilities. Edo, Imo, Kaduna, Plateau, and Benue also face significant exposure. Mohammed has directed the National Emergency Management Agency and local authorities to facilitate evacuations and stage essential supplies, such as food and medical kits, to protect affected populations.
