Nigerian Power Consumers Invoiced N208.15 Billion for May Electricity

According to NERC data, Nigerian electricity distribution companies improved their revenue collection efficiency in May 2026, gathering N208.15 billion despite a decline in billing efficiency.

Nigerian electricity users spent N208.15 billion on power consumption during May 2026. This data comes from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) latest Commercial Performance Factsheet, which highlights a notable rise in revenue collection efficiency by distribution companies (DisCos), even as their billing efficiency saw a slight drop.

Total electricity supplied to these firms reached N328.95 billion, marking an 8.58 per cent growth compared to April. Customers were billed N252.87 billion, resulting in a billing efficiency of 76.87 per cent, which is a decrease of 6.45 percentage points from the prior month. Conversely, revenue collection efficiency rose to 82.32 per cent, a 1.66 percentage point gain. Consequently, the 11 distribution firms managed to secure N208.15 billion, representing a 2.23 per cent improvement in collections.

The industry’s revenue recovery efficiency hit 77.31 per cent in May. While the average allowed tariff reached N124.39 per kilowatt-hour, the actual average collection was N96.16 per kilowatt-hour, a 5.85 per cent dip. Ikeja Electric led the sector with a 94.63 per cent recovery rate, followed by Eko DisCo and Abuja DisCo. Meanwhile, Kaduna, Jos, and Kano DisCos remained at the bottom of the rankings, showing that revenue collection difficulties persist in various regions.
