The Nigerian Armed Forces have formally committed to maintaining neutrality and professional standards throughout the 2027 general elections. During a seminar in Abuja titled The Role of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Personnel in Conducting Free, Fair and Credible Elections: The 2027 General Elections in Perspective, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, emphasized the importance of human rights and strict adherence to the constitution.
Represented by Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, the Defence Chief noted that the military’s mandate involves assisting civil authorities and suppressing insurrection. He highlighted that the conduct of troops during recent elections in states including Kogi, Ondo, and Rivers serves as a positive blueprint for future operations. Personnel were instructed to remain apolitical while protecting the public.
Representing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan stated that electoral integrity relies heavily on security partnerships. He noted that while the police lead election security, the armed forces provide essential support. Amupitan identified modern threats such as cyber-interference and misinformation as key challenges for 2027. He concluded by affirming that INEC remains dedicated to inclusive voting and urged all agencies to uphold their constitutional duties to ensure the process reflects the will of the citizens.
