The Nigerian military conducted successful aerial operations against the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) within the Sambisa Forest of Borno State. The assault resulted in the death of a prominent VIP escort commander, Qaid Abu Khalid Al Muhajir, alongside eight of his fighters.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama reported on X that the strikes occurred on Saturday, August 8, 2026, targeting the Yuwe and Sabil Huda enclaves. Abu Khalid served as a vital operative, responsible for managing the protection and transport of senior ISWAP leaders. His deep understanding of local routes and tactical navigation allowed key members to travel between various terrorist hubs while avoiding detection by security personnel.
In addition to the nine confirmed deaths, several other militants suffered injuries. These casualties included individuals linked to a previous ambush on Nigerian troops near the Bita–Yamtage corridor in the Gwoza Local Government Area. Analysts believe this operation severely hampers the group’s logistics and movement capabilities across the Sambisa and Gwoza regions, specifically restricting the mobility of high-ranking operatives amid increased government military surveillance.
