The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed recent media claims regarding a supposed ban by Kuwait on Nigerian housemaids. According to ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, these reports are inaccurate. The confusion stems from a long-standing decision by the Nigerian Embassy in Kuwait City to pause the deployment of domestic workers until their welfare and working conditions can be better addressed.
This is not a new directive from the Kuwaiti government. Instead, it reflects an ongoing policy initiated by the Nigerian mission to protect its citizens. Recent international media reports had suggested that Kuwait restricted recruitment from 27 nations, including Nigeria, as part of new labor updates. However, the ministry emphasized that the Nigerian government initiated the suspension itself to ensure the safety and dignity of its workers abroad.
Both nations remain in diplomatic contact to establish a better framework for migration. The ministry aims to create a system that guarantees fair treatment and legal protection for Nigerian employees.
