The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has formally apologized to the Nigerian government and citizens after the Super Falcons missed out on direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup during the latest Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). On behalf of the federation and the national team, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau conveyed profound remorse regarding the outcome.
Gusau acknowledged the widespread frustration felt by fans who backed the team throughout the tournament. He noted that the squad carried the nation’s expectations and the significant support of the government, making the failure to advance particularly difficult.
The federation offered a specific apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They highlighted his significant investment and dedication to the welfare of female athletes. The NFF admitted they failed to return that confidence with a successful performance, despite the rewards and recognition the President previously granted the team.
Apologies were also directed to the National Assembly, the National Sports Commission, and all stakeholders. Looking ahead, the NFF confirmed that qualification remains possible via the CAF play-offs and the subsequent FIFA tournament. Gusau emphasized that the federation is committed to a thorough internal review of their technical and logistical operations. The leadership promised to regroup and fight to secure a World Cup spot, asking fans to continue supporting the Super Falcons during this transition.
