A recent surge of violence has disrupted communities throughout the Sankera axis in Benue State, leading to one death and multiple injuries. Residents within the Ukum and Katsina-Ala Local Government Areas are increasingly alarmed by these recurring incursions.
James Andoaver, a local community leader, reported that armed individuals—described by locals as a mix of herders and bandits—have conducted coordinated strikes over the last three days. These raids impacted villages including Tse-Abali Shor in Ukum and areas near Tiir Council Ward in Katsina-Ala.
During a 2:30 am raid on Thursday, Utsenda Aber was killed, while his wife suffered significant machete wounds. Another victim, Amokaha Koonoon, was similarly attacked on Thursday evening while traveling near Tse-Iam. Andoaver highlighted that insecurity has escalated on major transit routes such as the Zaki-Biam-Sankera-Chito Road, urging citizens to limit travel at night and remain alert.
In contrast, Katsina-Ala LGA Chairman Justin Shaaku downplayed the events as simple robberies rather than a broader security failure. He claimed no deaths occurred and emphasized that local authorities are working to remove criminal elements from the area. Attempts to gather official comments from the Ukum LGA Chairman and the Benue State Police spokesperson were unsuccessful.
