The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that a clerical error by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its list of candidates does not alter the party’s choice for the Edo South Senatorial District. According to Agada Abuh Theophilus, the party’s director of communications, Mrs Epelle-Asemota Bridgitte Osayuki is the legitimate candidate.
The party stated that while INEC displayed the correct name for Mrs Epelle-Asemota, it incorrectly linked the photograph and credentials of a different individual to her profile. The NDC emphasized that they fulfilled all legal obligations under the Electoral Act and the Constitution by properly submitting their chosen candidate’s documentation to the electoral body.
Asserting that the error lies solely with INEC, the party demanded an explanation for the oversight. Furthermore, the NDC dismissed attempts to invalidate her candidacy based on tribal concerns, noting that she has lifelong ties to the Benin region. The party concluded by calling for unity among those disappointed by the results of its primaries to avoid undermining the organization.
