The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the leadership of the University of Jos to refrain from scheduling academic or institutional activities during the designated time for Friday Jummah prayers. Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group’s Executive Director, issued a statement on Monday highlighting this concern.
The issue stems from a planned lecture regarding Lassa fever, scheduled by the Department of Pharmacy at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for Friday, June 26, 2026, between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm. The notice was attributed to Sitlong Goodness on behalf of the Medical Advisory Committee chairman.
Akintola described the timing as inflammatory and legally inappropriate, asserting that it hinders the promotion of religious harmony. He emphasized that the university and JUTH must respect the fundamental rights of Muslim students and staff by ensuring their religious obligations are not interrupted. He urged the institutions to adopt a more tolerant approach and prioritize the rule of law to avoid creating unnecessary conflict.
