Multiple fatalities discovered in Brussels elevator shaft following construction site blaze

Authorities in Brussels report that several people have died after a fire spread to elevator shafts in a construction site at the Oxy tower, with six individuals initially listed as missing.

Multiple casualties were reported Tuesday following a fire at a building site in central Brussels. Authorities confirmed that six individuals are currently missing. The blaze erupted at the Oxy tower, though the origin of the fire remains unknown.

Although emergency crews extinguished the flames rapidly, their subsequent search revealed the fire had traveled into the lift shafts. Two elevators were found trapped inside the structure. Brecht Speybrouck, a representative for the Brussels Labour Prosecutor’s Office, noted that rescuers managed to force one lift door open, discovering multiple bodies. Officials are uncertain if the deceased include all six missing persons or if more victims remain trapped in the second lift.

Two individuals sustained severe burns and were transported to a nearby hospital, while one firefighter received medical attention at the scene for heat exposure. The Oxy tower, located just 500 meters from the Grand Place, is currently being developed to include apartments, a hotel, and various dining establishments.
