Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has stated that the South-East region is currently enjoying a stronger sense of inclusion in national affairs. Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State, following the inaugural regional security summit, the minister encouraged residents of the South-East to move past the narrative of marginalization. He argued that any previous grievances regarding exclusion are not reflective of President Bola Tinubu’s current administration.
As evidence of this renewed commitment, Idris pointed to significant infrastructure projects across the region and the appointment of former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator Dave Umahi, to the prominent role of Minister of Works. While addressing the region’s security challenges, the minister emphasized that sustainable peace requires more than military intervention; it necessitates economic growth, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development. He noted that the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda seeks to foster an environment where businesses and communities can flourish.
When questioned about the detention of Nnamdi Kanu and the government’s approach to Biafra agitators, the minister declined to offer comments, citing the ongoing judicial process. He reiterated that the administration is focused on creating a secure atmosphere where all citizens can pursue prosperity. Idris also defended the government’s recent economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, as essential steps to rectify long-standing structural weaknesses. He acknowledged the temporary difficulties these changes have caused but highlighted various relief programs designed to support Nigerians.
Concluding his remarks, the minister urged the media to promote responsible journalism by avoiding misinformation. He expressed confidence that a peaceful and stable South-East will naturally become a magnet for investment, leading to job creation and long-term economic development for the entire region.
