Matthias Jaissle has surfaced as the primary candidate to take over as the manager of Newcastle United, replacing the outgoing Eddie Howe. Howe, who has led the team since November 2021 and notably secured the 2025 Carabao Cup, is departing St James’ Park after five years.
The 38-year-old German tactician previously managed RB Salzburg, where he won two Austrian Bundesliga titles and an Austrian Cup. Currently the manager of Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, Jaissle guided the club to consecutive Asian Champions League victories in 2025 and 2026. His appointment would likely align with the preferences of Newcastle’s Saudi ownership group.
Jaissle, a former defender whose playing career at Hoffenheim was cut short by injury, is known for implementing a high-intensity, aggressive pressing style. His current squad at Al-Ahli features notable figures such as Ivan Toney, Edouard Mendy, and Roger Ibanez. There is speculation that Jaissle’s existing relationship with England manager Thomas Tuchel, who coached Jaissle during his youth career at Stuttgart, could influence player recruitment, particularly regarding a potential return to the Premier League for Toney.
Newcastle faces a transitional period after a 12th-place finish last season and the departures of high-profile players like Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. The club is now preparing for their upcoming Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 23.
