Lawyer and activist Maduabuchi Idam has charged the Nigerian government with failing to establish strong policies to address the ongoing xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa. He argues that mere diplomatic efforts are insufficient and that the state must adopt firm, legal measures to safeguard the lives and economic interests of its people.
Idam expressed disappointment that despite frequent discussions within the National Assembly, there has been no tangible institutional response to the hostility. He noted that while South African corporations continue to operate profitably within Nigeria, the local government has failed to implement necessary regulatory oversight or fiscal reforms to demand accountability for the treatment of Nigerians abroad.
The activist also highlighted a personal frustration regarding a delayed court ruling in his case against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited. He lamented that the judicial process has been sidelined by election-related matters, preventing a timely verdict on issues of consumer protection and alleged unfair trade practices by a South African firm.
In his statement, Idam reiterated that the government must move beyond rhetoric. He suggested that implementing targeted economic policies would send a clear signal that Nigeria prioritizes the dignity and security of its citizens both at home and across international borders.
