Senator Nenadi Usman, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, has called on political figures across Nigeria to embrace patriotism and focus on substantive policy issues as the country looks toward the 2027 electoral cycle. She shared these remarks in Jos on Friday during the 80th birthday event for Jonah Jang, the former Governor of Plateau State.
Usman stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on leaders valuing the national interest above partisan objectives. While acknowledging that political competition is essential to democracy, she warned against letting rivalry devolve into hatred or social instability. She argued that the next election should be viewed as a clash of ideas and character rather than a battle against fellow citizens.
Highlighting the need for unity, the Labour Party chair stated that politicians have a responsibility to act as unifiers who build bridges across ethnic, political, and religious lines. She urged political stakeholders to reject divisive rhetoric and instead cultivate mutual respect. According to Usman, history honors those who strengthen democratic institutions and prioritize the nation over those who merely provoke conflict. She concluded that democracy can only thrive when tolerance is prioritized, noting that political disagreement should not translate into personal animosity.
