La Liga representatives are planning an urgent inspection of the Estadio de Balaidos after reports emerged regarding a fungus infestation on the playing surface. This assessment will determine if Celta Vigo’s season opener against Osasuna can proceed as planned this Sunday at 20:30 BST.
Reports indicate that the fungal damage has prompted Celta Vigo to request a postponement of the fixture, though their opponents, Osasuna, have expressed a willingness to play regardless of the conditions. League officials are expected to visit the 24,870-seat venue within the next day to make a final ruling.
The stadium, which hosted a friendly match before Spain’s 2026 World Cup victory, is currently undergoing long-term renovations. It is slated to be one of the host venues for the 2030 World Cup, with future upgrades designed to boost capacity to over 40,000. Unlike several other La Liga clubs that postponed their opening games due to player participation in the World Cup final, Celta Vigo had chosen to move forward with their original schedule.
