On Monday morning, the Kwara State Fire Service successfully stopped a potential inferno at the YTK Filling Station in Ilorin. The emergency involved a 45,000-liter petrol tanker marked ARP 51 XB, located in the Apata region of Eyenkorin.
According to fire service spokesperson Hassan Adekunle, the accident happened around 6:02 a.m. when the driver lost control while maneuvering the vehicle. The truck hit the station wall, causing the fuel compartment to break away from the main chassis.
Fire crews arrived quickly to secure the area. They immediately focused on cooling the environment to remove ignition risks and prevent a fire. Through their actions, the flammable load remained stable. The team then oversaw the safe transfer of the petrol into a different tanker. No injuries or deaths were reported.
Chief Fire Officer Alabi Muhammed praised the team for their rapid and professional work. He reminded all tanker operators and fuel dealers to follow strict safety protocols when handling hazardous materials to avoid future accidents.
