On Tuesday, the Kano State House of Assembly ordered a three-month suspension for the chairmen of Bagwai, Bebeji, and Rogo local government areas. These officials face serious accusations involving financial misconduct, abuse of authority, and betrayals of public trust.
This disciplinary action stems from a report delivered by the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. Hon. Ali Muhammad Bebeji, who chairs the committee, explained that the investigation was sparked by petitions from local legislative councils and concerned residents. The committee verified these claims by auditing official documents and interviewing local government representatives.
In Bagwai, the chairman is accused of misusing funds intended for local development. Investigations into the Bebeji chairman uncovered claims of contract manipulation, improper land sales, and requiring contractors to pay into unauthorized personal accounts. Meanwhile, the Rogo chairman faces accusations of disregarding administrative policies, undermining social welfare programs, and mishandling budgets meant for community electrification and road projects.
Invoking its authority under Sections 128 and 129 of the Nigerian Constitution, the Assembly voted to implement the committee’s recommendation for an immediate three-month suspension. This period will allow for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations. The Speaker of the House has since instructed the Clerk to notify the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to carry out the suspension order.
