New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has firmly pushed back against suggestions that Cristiano Ronaldo is a burden to the national squad. Jesus, who officially stepped into his role on July 10 on a four-year deal, labeled the 41-year-old an icon for the nation.
Previously managing Al-Nassr, Jesus worked directly with Ronaldo to secure a Saudi Pro League title. Speaking to Canal 11, the 71-year-old manager emphasized that Ronaldo remains an asset rather than a liability. While acknowledging that public opinion varies, Jesus stated he intends to have personal discussions with all his players, including Ronaldo, before making selection choices.
The coach dismissed concerns regarding the player’s age, noting his historical importance to Portuguese football. Ronaldo faced intense backlash following the 2026 World Cup, where he managed only three goals before Portugal’s round-of-16 exit against Spain. Despite the skepticism surrounding his performance at age 41, Jesus maintained his stance that he would continue to select the legendary forward provided he performs at a high level.
