Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker to Make England Test Debuts

Jordan Cox and Sonny Baker are slated for their Test debuts in England’s second match against New Zealand, as the side undergoes changes following the exclusion of Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson.

Essex batsman Jordan Cox and Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker are set to make their Test debuts for England in the upcoming second Test match against New Zealand, starting Wednesday. The squad announcement follows a period of upheaval for the team, including an incident at a London nightclub involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, both of whom have been excluded pending an investigation.

Surrey’s Matthew Fisher returns to the side for his second Test, marking his first appearance since 2022. Additionally, Jofra Archer makes his return to the international setup this summer. The team will be without Ollie Robinson, who is sidelined with knee soreness, while Shoaib Bashir misses out as England has decided against selecting a specialist spinner. Jamie Smith remains in the playing XI, though Somerset wicketkeeper James Rew is on standby should Smith need to depart for the birth of his child.

Coach Brendon McCullum expressed optimism regarding the team’s balance, highlighting Cox’s aggressive style and Baker’s ability to bowl at high speeds. Despite the recent distractions, McCullum believes the squad remains competitive and looks forward to a strong performance against the touring New Zealand side.
