Residents from the Umuawafor, Umuokereke, and Umunwogu villages in the Isiala Aro-Ngwa area of Abia State have requested that the government cease further land acquisition for infrastructure projects. This demand follows reports that the state intends to seize local land for a planned smart city initiative.
Community members argue they have already ceded significant portions of their ancestral property for previous state initiatives, such as the Abia State Polytechnic and a trailer park. Friday Appolos, speaking on behalf of the villagers, stated that their available land is exhausted. He emphasized that the community feels marginalized and requested that the government seek alternative locations for new projects rather than targeting their remaining territory.
Beyond the loss of ancestral space, there is growing tension regarding land previously sold to private individuals. Several local investors, represented by attorney Obiora Edward, have already initiated legal action under Suit No. HOS/168/2025 to protect their property rights. Edward noted that while the case is currently pending in court, there are reports that activities may proceed on the disputed sites despite the ongoing litigation.
The community and their legal representatives are calling for a peaceful resolution. They insist that if the state moves forward with any acquisition plans, it must follow legal channels, provide proper notification, and ensure fair compensation for all affected landowners.
