The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State is currently experiencing internal discord regarding whether to support Governor Nasir Idris for another term. While certain key party figures advocate for his re-election, the official state leadership has publicly distanced itself from this stance.
This friction originated after a faction of party elders, headed by former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd.), publicly endorsed the governor. The group pointed to his administration’s progress in infrastructure, specifically road projects, alongside advancements in health, education, and economic empowerment.
Alhaji Usman Bello Suru, the state PDP Chairman, formally opposed this endorsement shortly after it was announced. He argued that the party is already focused on established candidate selection processes. This clash has highlighted deep-seated divisions within the opposition as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
Meanwhile, Maj.-Gen. Bello Sarkin Yaki (rtd.), who represented the party as its 2023 governorship candidate, has aligned himself with the governor. During a visit from the state media team, he stated that Governor Idris remains the most capable leader for the state. He specifically lauded the governor’s efforts in upgrading the state capital and renovating critical road and social infrastructure.
Sarkin Yaki dismissed critics of the governor as individuals driven by personal gain. He encouraged local residents to back the current administration to ensure the sustainability of ongoing projects. Despite this high-profile support, the official rejection from the state party chairman leaves the PDP’s direction for the 2027 contest uncertain.
