Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has cautioned that the spread of fake news and hate speech is being weaponized by criminals to compromise national security. Speaking at the South-East Regional Security Summit in Umuahia, Idris emphasized that maintaining order requires a collaborative effort involving the public, traditional leaders, and media organizations rather than relying solely on government forces.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to stabilizing the South-East, a hub of economic activity and innovation. Under President Bola Tinubu, the government is utilizing a multifaceted approach that combines military action with economic growth, judicial improvements, and intelligence-led operations. Investments in infrastructure and student loan programs are intended to provide opportunities for youth, thereby reducing their susceptibility to criminal groups.
Addressing the digital threat, Idris stated that security is now also a battle fought within the information sphere. To combat the dangers of online manipulation, his ministry has launched a Media and Information Literacy Institute in collaboration with UNESCO. He urged the press to prioritize accuracy and national unity over sensationalism, highlighting their vital role in shaping public perception.
Furthermore, the minister expressed his support for the introduction of state policing, arguing that localized security structures can better address regional needs. He encouraged stakeholders, including state leaders and traditional rulers, to participate in ongoing constitutional reforms. Idris concluded that a secure South-East is essential for the prosperity of the entire nation, noting that true peace stems from justice and inclusion.
