INEC Lacks Authority to Choose Party Candidates for 2027, Sambo Clarifies

Arise News editor Sumner Sambo states that INEC cannot impose candidates on political parties, limiting the commission’s role to monitoring and documentation for potential legal review.

Sumner Sambo, the Political Editor and Director of News at Arise News, asserts that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) holds no power to select candidates for political parties. He shared this perspective during a guest appearance on the Arise Television program ‘Prime Time’ this past Thursday.

Addressing the submission of candidate lists for the 2027 general elections, Sambo emphasized that INEC’s role is strictly observational. He explained that the commission is only meant to record the internal selection process. Should a dispute arise, the commission serves as a witness by presenting these records in court. In instances where no legal challenge occurs, INEC is obligated to recognize the candidate submitted by the party. He further noted that if an aggrieved individual feels cheated, the burden falls on that person to seek resolution through the judiciary.
